Wai Ariki Hot Springs and Spa is a spa and wellness facility that embraces Māori culture and traditions, particularly the concept of manaakitanga, which involves warmly welcoming visitors. The name "Wai Ariki" means "chiefly waters" and is directly linked to the origins of Rotorua's geothermal waters, which were called to New Zealand by Ngātoroirangi, a prominent chief and priest of the Arawa tribe.
The Wai Ariki spa journey aims to offer visitors from New Zealand and around the world the same healing benefits that have been cherished by Ngāti Whakaue for generations. By incorporating Māori traditions and the natural geothermal resources of the region, Wai Ariki provides an authentic and culturally rich experience for its guests.
The site presented various challenges, including ground conditions and geothermal factors. However, after a ground remediation preload period taking 9-12 months, this project
provides a truly exceptional experience, setting a new standard in the region.
TMCo completed the seismic design for this project.
